Letters in Mathematics: Why?

Hello Students!

For this week's online blog assignment, please respond to the question in the following comic strip:

Since we have been introduced to variables in mathematics, put yourself in the position of the teacher. How will you respond to this student's question? In 3-5 sentences, create a response you would give this student. Keep in mind why we use letters in mathematics as this could help you in creating your response.

  • Be sure to respond to the prompt FIRST, then respond to the post of another student in the class.

Introduction to Online Blogs

Hello Students!

Welcome to our Online Class Blog! I am excited to see you all interact with not just me, but your other peers as well. I hope you will enjoy blogging this semester as much as I do! Let's have a great time discussing mathematics on here and hopefully you leave 7th grade with more than just the experience of learning inside the classroom!

As I shared with you in class a couple of weeks ago, this blog will be counted as a HOMEWORK assignment, which is worth 15% of your final grade. The requirements for this weekly blog assignment are not difficult, all you need is an open mind and a good understanding of the mathematics that we discuss in class.

Below are the guidelines to keep in mind when writing your online blog post:

_____________________________________________________________________
Guidelines for Writing Your Online Blog Post

1. Blogs are due every Sunday by 10pm ChST.

2. There are two components to your grade for this blog assignment:

  • Respond to the prompt on the blog as posted by the teacher, and
  • Respond to at least ONE of your peers' posts in the class.

3. Your post should be no less than 1 paragraph long and no more than 2 paragraphs long. Keep your posts short and simple. Use vocabulary terms that you've learned in class whenever necessary.

4. HAVE FUN! It's very rare that you get the opportunity to showcase what you know (especially in mathematics) to your peers in this format. Be creative with your posts and DON'T STRESS ðŸ˜Š.

_____________________________________________________________________

If you do not have access to a computer or Internet at home, please let me know ahead of time so I don't penalize you for not completing the assignment.

Whenever our math classroom has the TOWs, you can use the laptops during that time to complete your online blog assignment. In addition, if you would like to work on your online blog in class at any time during the school week (during break, lunch, etc.), please notify me ahead of time so I can make arrangements for you to complete the assignment.

You are responsible for completing this online blog assignment. I will NOT tolerate any excuses for not completing the assignment unless you communicate with me ahead of time. Like I said in class, I am here to help you succeed. This online blog assignment will get you to become comfortable reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the mathematics language. You may not feel comfortable doing this at first, but I promise you that you will gain a lot just by actively communicating to your classmates and I about the prompts that are being asked.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this assignment, please let me know. I am open to suggestions to help you succeed and become a stronger student in mathematics, so please, let's communicate on a regular basis on here. Thank you and happy blogging 😊!

~Mr. Tudela
